I usually shift super early to maximize mileage and put as little stress on the engine as possible. I'm curious how weird/normal my habits are. Now naturally there's going to be a huge difference in a 3/4 diesel vs an S2000 but I think it'll be interesting to see what you guys come up with.

3500 on average.

5500 if I need to not be going slow.

7000 to get close to VTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAK*

(I don't actually have VTAK)

Depends on the gear. 1rst: 3500 range; 2nd 3000 range; 3rd 2700 range; 4th 2300; 5th 2000; hold 6th around 2000.

I'd actually have to double check this today as I shift to sound now haha.

the highest point that i'll shift is 3000 RPM on a diesel. I usually change at 2500 RPM, as it still is in the power band. I usually cruise between 1000 and 2000

My redline is at 6250 (2JZ), so I usually shift at 3-3.5k. I never redline, the highest I go is 5.75k

what percentage to your redline might be more relevant.

I cruise high, as the 5th gear is terrible, I have the parts to change to one from a different model.

daily I shift low because slow traffic and MPGs, weekend... redlines, shift lights, noise :D

1995 Dakota, 5.2 Magnum V8 - 5000 RPM red line. Generally I shift under 2k RPM because economy.

1987 900 SPG, 2.0 16v turbo - 5500 RPM redline. Shifts usually around 2500 for economy, bounce it off the limiter for fun.

2007 Focus, 2.0 Duratec 20E. Never noticed the redline. Don't shift it. Put it in drive and consider shooting myself.

The cruise one is out of my control. If i'm at a constant speed, it's in 6th gear and does whatever. On surface streets that's about 2200-2600, at highway speed it's low 3000s.

I typically shift up at 2500-2800, but occasionally I let it hit the boost threshold at 3200 or so to get a nice 'pshhh' from the BPV. Further proof that I am a child.

I usually shift at around 3000-3500 from first to second, and then around 2500 from then on until I'm around 40mph and then I skip straight to 5th. Highway cruising is around 3200rpm in 5th in my car. 90mph is at 4k!

Usually 2800-3k. Keeps me on the 1.8 side of "1.8t". Cruising RPM is directly related to road speed. On city streets I keep it below 2k, on 55mph roads, it's around 2200. On the highway, 2800+. Damn gearing.

If I'm driving normally, I'll cruise at 2k and shift at 3k or every 10mph after 15mph(ie: 2nd at 15, 3rd at 25, 4th at 35, etc).

If I'm reeling racy, it's more like 5k+ when I shift, obviously I guess. Sometimes I like to cruise in 3rd gear since it has a pretty big range.

Currently I'm driving a '99 Blazer winter beater. So I shift at 2,000, at which point the drama would suggest its going at least three times that speed. I cruise it at 1,000 to 1,200 rpms.

In two months, when I get my roadster out of the warehouse, those numbers will be 7,000 and 2,500 respectively

I drive a slushbox but when I put it manual mode and use the paddles, it's usually because I'm having fun. Shifting around 6500 and listening to the exhaust scream. Though that usually translates to <11 MPG

The rest of the time, I don't really notice when it shifts. When left in auto mode, it's pretty smooth and quiet.

WRX = shift below 4k if you have nowhere to be, because you won't be going anywhere. After 4k you basically have no choice but to shift near redline because you get there in a blink. Definitely one of the most odd (maybe worst?) powerbands I've ever driven, but I still enjoy it.

The EJ25D in my '98 Subaru Legacy Outback doesn't wake up until about 3000 RPM. It turns about 3200 RPM while highway cruising in 5th. I shift around 4500 if I'm DDing, but I run it up to 6500 or so when I'm getting on the highway.

I was torn about which vehicle to answer for. I do a lot of commuting in either the wife's BRZ and on my bike. The bike is obviously going to be a weird metric since it's red line is around 11k, but it's gears are so tall I usually skip several while riding normally (1st takes me to 75 MPH+). So I answered with what I usually did in the BRZ.

Depends. I'll rev it out to the rev limiter at least once a day, on average. Normally cruise around a bit over 2k up to about 2,500. Both of my cars cruise on the highway at well over that though. Close ratio gearboxes aren't good for highway mileage :)

Kinja'd!!! SteyrTMP > 472CID
01/25/2014 at 03:08

Kinja'd!!!0

Depends on the car.

Impreza, cruise at close to 3000@74mph, change anywhere from 3500-redline, but usually around 3500-4000.

Seven, cruise around 2800, shift anywhere from 3500-7000, but typically around the 4000 range. I can't really stomp on it with the lean issues.

Mini Cooper S (deceased) Cruised at 2600@74mph, shifted at redline@7500 (tuned). It is missed, if only it had been RWD/AWD.

Serious question: where ARE you supposed to shift at on the street? I've fumbled through driving around town a few times, but I really have no idea what to do outside of because racecar mode. I know it's poor form and hard on a car to rev the balls off of an engine on the road, so I try not to, but...huh?

I don't think there's a "correct" time to shift. There's probably a point at which it's most efficient, but there's so many variables (type of engine, hills vs flatland) that it's hard to say. General consensus seems to be 2-4k for normal driving.

Kinja'd!!! Big Block I-4 > 472CID

Kinja'd!!!0

This question is tough because before warm I am at 2-3K shifts but after warm usually 5K and up. Cruising for me is high because the Miata has such a close ratio 5spd that it is around 1K rpms for every 20 mph in 5th. so if I am at 70 I'm up to 3.5K so on and so forth.
